Chapter 13

Mrs. Morrison watched her daughter’s departure, her mouth agape. She shook her head.

“Doesn’t have room for us at that house she remodeled and can’t even kiss her own mother ‘hello,’” she muttered to herself.

“Come on, Gram,” Megan urged her. “Gramps is waiting for us.”

At least, tending to her grandparents’ needs was providing Megan with something useful to do as well as a temporary distraction from her grief.

Hoping that he’d have time to meet me for lunch, I called Wes and was delighted to learn that he did. He suggested Tony’s, but I wasn’t quite ready to go back to the parking lot where someone had tried to run us down, so we decided to go to a new place that his sister Denise had recommended.

Fifteen minutes later, we were sitting in a cozy booth at the Happy Hamburger. Denise usually went in for a more upscale dining experience, but obviously she liked casual dining as well because that’s what the tiny place offered. Even though the place was busy, the high backs of our booth effectively buffered us from the other patrons, and we were able to talk privately.

“I saw the young guy who brought Tracey those dead roses this morning. He was delivering flowers to Lisa’s house, and he may have been driving a black pickup, but I’m not sure about that.” I proceeded to fill Wes in on all the details about my strange encounter with the delivery man. “Do you suppose he really works for a florist?” I asked.

“Could be, but his moves suggest he doesn’t,” Wes said thoughtfully. “Why don’t you let me check with the local florists? They’ll answer an inquiry from the police more readily than one from a member of the public.”

“That would be great! What do you make of the black pickup truck? I really don’t know if the guy was driving it or not.”

“Could be just a coincidence, but my radar’s up, too. If he drove that pickup when we were attacked, then it’s likely that whoever’s after me wants to get at me through you. That would fit in with my theory about an angry relative, someone who blames me for sending a loved one to prison. In that case, I’d read the dead flowers as a warning, but it’s cryptic.

“From Tracey’s impressions of this delivery man and your description of him, he doesn’t sound familiar to me. And since he ran away from you this morning, he may not mean you any harm. I’d really like to get my hands on the guy and find out, once and for all, whether Liam’s behind the black roses prank.”

“I would, too. Liam seemed believable when he told us he didn’t do it, but I guess you never know.”

“Right. Like I told you, I can usually tell whether or not a suspect’s lying to me, but not Liam. He hasn’t called Tracey since we talked to him, has he?”

“No. She would have let you know. He did unfollow her on Facebook, which is a good sign, I guess.
